A MESA GROUP RESEARCH SUMMARY
AI Adoption Is Already Universal
What Stanford's 2026 AI Index found about how far AI has spread
Stanford HAI, 2026 AI Index Report · A Mesa Group summary
There is a version of the AI conversation that treats adoption as a decision still waiting to be made. Stanford's data closes that question.
The finding
88% of organizations use AI
Stanford's 2026 AI Index reports that organizational adoption of AI has reached 88 percent. Nearly nine in ten organizations now use it in at least one business function.
The consumer picture moved even faster. Generative AI reached 53 percent adoption across the population in roughly three years, outpacing both the personal computer and the internet at the same stage.
What the AI Index is
The AI Index is Stanford's annual measurement of the field, now in its ninth edition and running past four hundred pages. It tracks technical performance, economics, responsible AI, policy, education, and public opinion, drawing on original analysis and large-scale industry survey data.
It is the most widely cited independent measurement in the category, and it is independent in the way that matters. Stanford is not selling AI.
The number underneath the number
Adoption at 88 percent is a low bar by design. Use in at least one business function is not transformation. It counts the marketing team drafting copy and the finance team running a forecast through a model.
That is exactly what makes it useful. It means the question is no longer whether AI is in your company. It is already there, in some function, whether or not it arrived through a decision anyone made.
The same edition reports two numbers that sit uncomfortably beside the first. Documented AI incidents rose to 362 in 2025, up from 233 the year before. And the Foundation Model Transparency Index, which measures how much model developers disclose about their systems, fell from 58 to 40. Adoption climbing, incidents climbing, disclosure falling.
Why it matters
A company that has not decided how AI enters its operations has not avoided the question. It has answered it by default, one login and one tool at a time, distributed across functions that made the call locally.
That is the condition most organizations are actually in. Not deciding whether to adopt. Discovering what has already been adopted, and by whom, and under whose authority.
